Suzanne Law Hawes  

Suzanne Law Hawes’59 EdD, RN, NCPysA
President
A graduate of Seton Hill College (PA), Sue has taught at the CU School of Nursing, Rutgers, and was director of a diploma school before she became a Dean of the School of Health Professions. She is now Professor Emerita of William Paterson University. Sue is an ex-Peace Corps volunteer, and again is President of this organization. She also sits on the Medical Advisory Board of EHE International.

   
Margaret L. Fracaro
 

Margaret L. Fracaro’70, MA, CIC, RN
Vice President

Peggy is Nursing Director, Infection Prevention and Control, New York Presbyterian Hospital. She has worked in Infection Control for thirty one years, published abstracts and articles and lectures extensively. Peggy holds an MA in Nursing Administration from Teachers College and is certified as an Infection Control Practitioner. She is a former President and has served the Association for almost two decades.

   

Lousie Malarkey

 

Louise M. Malarkey’62, RN, MSN, EdD
Treasurer

Louise has been a nursing educator for 36 years, with 15 years as chair. She has published on clinical nursing, nursing education and is co-author of six nursing texts of which she is currently doing an update revision to one. She has served on several board committees and has been chairperson of the Scholarship Committee before becoming Treasurer.

   

Lois Mueller Glazier

 

Lois Mueller Glazier '60, PhD, RN
Secretary

Lois spent her career in nursing education - Assistant Professor of Nursing at Columbia, faculty member at Washburn University and later as Assistant Dean for 17 years. She is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnae Award from CUPHSONAA, is active in Sigma Theta Tau and Phi Kappa Phi and is currently active in community activities in Connecticut. Lois earned a PhD in the Nurse Scientist program at the University of Kansas. She has served on the Historical Committee and Nominating Committee.

   

Denise N. Ewing

 

Denise Nelligan Ewing BA, BS, MS
Administration

With a BA in Psychology and Magazine Journalism from Boston University and a Masters in Psychology from Fordham, Denise has taught, done research and clinical work at Fordham, SUNY-Purchase and University of Massachusetts (Amherst) as well as several local colleges. With three young children, two of whom are twins in elementary school, she now combines home responsibilities with administering our Alumni Association office.

Mary Ann Jonaitis

 

MaryAnn Jonaitis '77, 'EdD, RN, CDN, CNS, CDE
MaryAnn worked at CPMC as a maternal nutritionist prior to her current position, a researcher on the NIH-sponsored ACCORD Trials. She is credentialed as a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) and holds a NYS license as a Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist (CDN). Her work with high-risk pregnant women with diabetes led her to credentialing as a Certified Nurse Educator (CDE). MaryAnn holds a masters and a doctorate in Nutrition and Public Health from Teachers College and has served on the Scholarship committee prior to becoming a Board member.

   

Patricia Jones

 

 

Patricia Jones ’60, MA, Med, BS, RN
Pat’s career at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, New York Hospital and Cornell University focused on administration and education and she was a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Critical Care. Pat has published in the field of cardiac nursing, participated in the World Congress of Cardiology and International Congress of Cardiology. Prior to retirement, she was Education Manager at St. Luke-Roosevelt Hospital. She earned both her MA and MEd at Teacher’s College. Formerly co-chairman of the Scholarship Committee, she has served on other Board Committees as well as being a long-time Board member.

   

Nora Barrett Tulchin

 

Nora Barrett Tulchin '70 BS, RN
Nora worked at Loeb Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Montefiore Hospital; she was Continuing Care Coordinator at Faulkner Hospital, Home Care Coordinator at St. Vincent's Medical Center and St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospitals. She is heavily involved in community activities - PTA, volunteer with Women in Self-Help Program, volunteer for My Sister's Place to name a few. Nora organized the ESL program for day workers and families.  She is also on the Surrogate Decision-Making Panel for Westchester.

Joan Ambrose McCormick

 

Joan Ambrose McCormick ’61, JD, RN
Joan has served as a member of the Finance Committee since 1987 and was Treasurer from 1997 – 2002. Joan raised horses, dogs and children for many years in Kentucky, working as a nurse at the University of Kentucky Medical Center as well as graduating from Kentucky’s Law School with a practice in Elder Law.  In 2005 Joan added Real Estate to her busy schedule and is a licensed Broker in Rhode Island and a Salesperson in Connecticut.

   

Sandra McLaughlin Johanson

 

Sandra McLaughlin Johanson ’64, PhD, RN
Sandy is an Advanced Practice Nurse in private practice of psychotherapy specializing in women’s reproductive cycle, mood disorders and cancer issues. After a career in nursing in the VNS, a faculty member at Seton Hall University, Clinical Nurse Specialist of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatric Services and Director of Nursing Research at Morristown Memorial Hospital; she now maintains a private practice. While raising her children, she completed a MA and PhD in Nursing from New York University.

   

Nancy V. Jackson

 
Janice Ziemba ’74, RN, BSN
Jan returns to the Board of Directors after serving previously including six years as Secretary. Her career includes public health nursing and 20 years at an internal medicine office. She retired from full time practice and now works per diem. Jan is involved in community activities including other boards of directors, and divides her time between Connecticut and New Hampshire.

Sandra McLaughlin Johanson

 

Joan Hagan Arnold '69, PhD, RN
Joan is a professor at Hunter College, City University of New York after serving as a consultant to New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation and a teaching position at the College of New Rochelle.  She coauthored several books: A Child Dies: A Portrait of Family Grief; Community Health Nursing: An Alliance of Health; Health Promotion Handbook, and Health Promotion in Practice.  She lectures on child death and family grief, is Chairperson of the Research Committee of the National Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs.  Joan is Chairperson of the Awards Committee and President of NEF.

   
Sandra McLaughlin Johanson   Pamela Scott Heydon ’60, BS, RN
Pam was responsible for helping her reunion class to celebrate a wonderful 50th reunion as she was the compiler of their class’s memory book. Her ability to network and organize profited everyone. In her early career in nursing she worked in pediatrics in Virginia and later years were devoted to bringing up her sons, retailing and advertising. She served on the Reunion Committee before running for a Board seat. In retirement Pam is active on the Board of her condominium association. She travels and enjoys her children / grandchildren on the West Coast and her summer home on Block Island.

Judith is an Adult Nurse Practitioner with a doctorate in Nursing Education from Teachers College. She is an Associate Professor of Nursing and Humanities at Penn State School of Nursing where she coordinates the CNS option and teaches in the doctoral program. She is a new member of the Board of Directors.

Marion R. Thompson  
Marion Richardson Thompson ’60 RN, MSN, MPA, CPHQ Marion has spent her entire career in health care. She spent over 35 years in the Nursing department at Columbia Presbyterian working in acute care, staff development, labor relations and quality improvement. Completing her second masters degree, she worked as Director for Quality Management Nursing at Montefiore Medical Center, St Joseph’s Hospital NJ, and the American Cancer Society. Marion has been the Association’s Reunion chairperson for over 15 years and is working at Affinity Health Plan.
   
Laurie Verdisco  
Laurie Verdisco’58 MA, RN, PNP
Completing decades of teaching nursing to Columbia students, Laurie also did research, published and lectured in orthopedics. As part of a surgical team, she worked in Kenya and continues after retirement to work part-time as a nurse practitioner in an orthopedic practice. She is a permanent member of the Board after serving as its President. Besides her hospitality to all CUPH grads, she is an educational volunteer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
